About Claire

I started my post on 29th March 2021 in my 36th year of nursing, becoming the first Care Coordinator in the UK.

I am delighted to be part of the Network team and proud to be a member of the first complete Care Coordinator Team and fly the flag for the great work being done around the Northern region.

My background is Midwifery followed by 30 years in neonatal care, previously a sister at RVI hospital in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

My accomplishments and passion are within the area of parental support and empowering parents as partners in neonatal care.

As outlined in the NCCR (2018), the role encompasses “enhancing the family experience”.

The ten neonatal units within the Northern Network have been split between 3 care coordinators.

The units I am working with are Sunderland, Queen Elizabeth (Gateshead), NSECH (Cramlington) and  UHND (Durham).

The main early priorities, as a team, are to support units to achieve Bliss Charter and UNICEF BFI accreditation and embed a culture of Family Integrated Care and the development of a Parent Advisory Group

We will also focus on facilities, resources and support for families.

We aim to be a resource and conduit between parents and health professionals and work towards reducing variation in practices across the Network in order to standardise care for babies and families.

Sharing best practice and celebrating successes within the Northern region is integral to the role.

I have set up a National Care Coordinator group to share ideas and support professionals around the UK.

The Northern Neonatal Network gives specialist and intensive neonatal care to babies born in the North East and Cumbria.
